At Grand Haven, the Buccaneers played well at times, but failed to capitalize on their offensive chances and saw the Rockets get the win on a goal following a corner kick.

Coach Aaron Dean said the loss serves as a reminder to his kids that nothing comes easy and they have to work hard every time out.

“It’s been constantly reminding them of the work we have to do,” said Dean, whose squad was in the Division 1 state finals last fall. “Then the Portage games, when we won all three games, the kids went back to the mentality that they’re just going to crush people.

“We came out against Reeths-Puffer and we were a little flat and didn’t have the urgency that we needed.”

Dean credited midfielder Gerrit Schaap and defender Kevin Lacroix with playing well, along with sub Nick Scarpino.

“It was frustrating, but for us, we consider these all preseason games heading into our conference schedule,” Dean said. “Every time we can learn something, we’ll take that and get better.”

Junior Varsity: 5-0, Connor Davison three goals, Isaac Joanisse goal and Jacob Kostner with a goal, all soph. Goalie Riley Taylor and Garrison Mast each made a couple nice stops.
