A special night for Fruitport

So the Trojans turned to their special teams to make a big play in Thursday's season-opener against Reeths-Puffer.

Shawn Knox broke free for an electrifying 83-yard punt return for a score, and the Trojans also blocked an extra point, which turned out to the be difference in a 21-20 victory over the Rockets.

"We had some kids make some plays," said first-year coach Greg Vargas, whose team also recovered a botched punt late in the game, then fell on a Rockets' fumble a few minutes later to wrap up the victory.

The start was a miserable one for Fruitport as the Trojans watched the Rockets march down and score on their first two possessions. Vargas said his team may have gotten a little too jazzed up too early when they honored former coach Steve Wilson prior to the game.

“The pregame activities, we were jacked up 15 minutes too early, then coming out, chilling, it took us a little bit to catch up with it,” Vargas said. “But we eventually did. We were able to persevere and take care of business.”
