The Warriors (12-2 overall) started out by defeating Muskegon Oakrkidge, 25-18, 25-15. They then lost the first set to Calvin Christian 25-12, but came back strong to win the second set 26-24 and the final 15-6.
"The girls showed a lot of heart tonight," WMC coach Ed Bailey said.
Rachel Bruinsma had 24 kills and 28 dig; Maria Ma added 15 kills and 12 digs; Vannessa Eekhoff finished with 10 kills; Julie Merz led the way with 44 assists; and Lorelle Hallenbeck had three blocks.
Freshmen: WMC defeated Holland 25-15, 25-20 and lost to Comstock Park 25-21, 9-25, 6-15 at Mona Shores on Thursday.
HAVEN JV 2-0 AT SHORES
Grand Haven’s junior varsity volleyball team went 2-0 at Mona Shores on Thursday, improving to 7-3 on the year. The Bucs beat Spring Lake, 25-12, 25-9, then topped the host Sailors, 25-16, 25-19. Emily Lachman and Autumn Monsma had eight kills each, while Rachel Sedgwick and Paige Holman each had nine service points. Hannah Landman and Holman each had 10 digs, while Sophie Stoepker and Anna Wilgenburg combined for 26 assists.
Freshmen: Grand Haven lost twice at Mona Shores, falling to the Sailors, 23-25, 25-12, 16-14, and to Spring Lake, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14. Lauren Strong led the way with nine kills, two aces and a block. Sierra Bessinger added two blocks, two kills and six aces, while Hanna Rinkevicz added 23 digs, four kills, five aces and a pair of blocks. Olivia Buikema had 13 digs, four kills, two aces and 32 assists.
