GH, SL girls cross country teams win invite titles

At West Ottawa’s Bredeweg Invitational, the Bucs’ varsity and junior varsity teams each captured first-place.

Junior Claire Borchers placed fourth overall to pace the varsity squad, as she crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 17 seconds. Lindy Vallier broke in the 19-minute range with a seventh-place showing, while Roxy Glasser ran a 20:07.

Freshmen Malea Teerman (20:09) and Hannah Kenny (20:35) rounded out the top five for the Bucs.

“To place five runners in the top 12, with 1-5 runners 1:18 apart, I’m happy with that this early in the season,” said head coach Scott Przystas. “The girls are starting to run together and work with one another to push each other along.”

Grand Haven’s top finisher in the JV race was senior Claudia Melton, who led from start to finish with a time of 21:35.

Grand Haven’s boys finished sixth at West Ottawa, but head coach John Tarr found positives with 25 runners who finished with personal best times.

“Many of the young guys are moving into varsity positions,” he said.

The Bucs had a few top runners out due to ACT testing, including their No. 2 runner, Will Swain. The team’s No. 1 competitor, Justin Pippel, had a very strong day by placing second overall to Grandville’s Cass Milenbach. Pippel clocked in at 16:30, and Tarr said he’ll only get better.

“He’s about a month ahead of his training from last year,” he said.
