Kiel leads marathon field

Kiel’s time of 2 hours, 52 minutes, 20.4 seconds on the scenic course that hit spots in Spring Lake, Grand Haven, Ferrysburg and Fruitport, was better than 129 other competitors in the test of endurance that covered just over 26 miles.

The top female marathoner was Osceola, Ind., resident Colleen Dabler, 38, who crossed the finish line in 3:36.28.

The fastest to cross the finish line from the Tri-Cities was Grand Haven’s Joshua Verhage, 32, who was sixth overall. He finished the event in 3:25.53.

In the half-marathon, in which 348 runners completed, the top finisher was Armada’s Guy Holmes, 46, who won in 1:19.05. He was just one second faster than Jesse Aukerman of Byron Center.

The top female finisher was St. Joseph’s Lisa Altman, who clocked in at 1:30.11.

A pair of Spring Lake residents each captured the Masters Division titles, with Tomas Garcia, 49, winning the men’s (1:27.21) and Anne Koopman, 48, taking the female (1:39.33). Spring Lake’s Bruce Terbeek, 60, also captured first in the Male Grand Masters Division, by clocking in at 1:43.35.

In the 5K run, Georgia resident Matt Triick (18:21.1) beat out Spring Lake’s Scott Van Strate by nearly 34 seconds for the win.

Muskegon’s Kristen Brown, 40, was the fastest female with a time of 19:25.9.

There were a total of 386 runners who completed the 5K.
