Local cross country teams set up for strong closing stretch

Tribune Staff • Jul 21, 2015 at 11:46 AM

The Lakers, running against all 10 state-ranked teams in their division, placed second behind Forest Hills Eastern in the Division 2 race at Portage.

The Lakers finished with 123 points, while FHE scored 97. Grand Rapids Christian was third at 155.

“Portage is seen as the biggest event outside of the state meet every year,” Lakers’ coach Aaron Andres said. “It’s circled on everyone’s calendar as the meet to run your best. All week we were looking forward to the opportunity to run against the best teams in the state.

“All 10 ranked teams were here at Portage, and our entire team ran amazingly. We had nearly all the team running new (personal-best times). I cannot say enough how our varsity runners continue to get stronger.”

Brittany Beeler paced the Lakers with a seventh-place finish, finishing in 18 minutes, 34 seconds. Teammate Carlyn Arteaga was next to cross the finish line in eighth place at 18:39.
