GH, SL golf shooting for regional success

Sure, Bitner has cherished the success his very young team has achieved this season, but recognizes it won’t win them any favors at the Division 3 regional meet, which begins today at Egypt Valley Country Club in Grand Rapids.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Bitner. “We’ve worked on our chipping quite a bit lately, first with a 10-point area, and then with a five-point area. And in the last three days, I’ve put the girls in a situation where they had to make five puts in a row from 5 feet, then they could leave (practice). They really showed some improvement.”

Bitner said the Lakers enter the regional not expecting to finish first — that will likely go to host and highly-ranked Forest Hills Eastern — but are hoping for a top three finish. That would send the Lakers to the state finals in Battle Creek on Oct. 19-20.

The Lakers have a definite game plan in place. Bitner said the greens at Egypt Valley “are like concrete,” so he’s instructed his team to hit their approach shots short and let them bounce and roll to the pin.

“We’ve got to land a few like butterflies with sore feet, especially on those fast greens,” Bitner said.
