Lakers to dedicate cross country course on Saturday

Nate Thompson • Jul 21, 2015 at 11:47 AM

The meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m.

Hall, a Muskegon native, began his teaching and coaching career at Spring Lake in 1964. He became the Lakers’ first cross country coach and also led the track and field program for over 30 years. He oversaw the design of the track facilities at Grabinski Field, and introduced girls’ teams in both track and cross country at the school.

His boys’ track teams experienced tremendous success, as Hall guided them to 41-straight dual meet victories from 1981 to 1986.

Hall retired from Spring Lake in 1992, but later served as a substitute teacher and was also a member of the Spring Lake Village Council. He passed away on Nov. 24, 2010.

After the conclusion of the invitational, Hall’s son, Jim, will host a reception for friends of the program at the Barber School Community Building at 102 West Exchange Street in Spring Lake from 2-6 p.m. Food and soft drinks will be provided.

A sign commemorating the Mel Hall Cross Country Course at SLHS will be erected in the spring.
