This past fall, he finished with a 27-10 record, with those losses coming to a collection of some of the best players from across the state.

Lakers’ coach Charlie Bassett, who was named the MHSTCA’s coach of the year for the second time in his illustrious career, said the all-state selection process is quite rigorous.

“There are over 30 of us who sit in a big room, and we look at all the finalists and semifinals at No. 1 singles, and we also look at quarterfinalists,” Bassett said. “We have every player’s record for the whole season. We look at whom they defeated and whom they lost to.

“Ryan had some good wins, and some good losses. If you lose 6-4 in the third set, or lose 7-5, 7-5, that’s a good loss against people who are outstanding players.”

In addition, the Lakers’ No. 1 doubles pair of sophomore Mitch Davis and sophomore Kasey Panyard was named honorable mention all-state.

That pair went 13-11 on the season, but earned all-state honors by upsetting the No. 6 seed at the Division 3 state tournament.

In addition, Bassett and Petoskey’s John Boyer were named co-coaches of the year in their regional.
