Cole's dominance reminiscent of another Bucs' standout

And just like Nicole (Poquette) Burns did, Cole will showcase her impressive array of skills at the college level at the University of Michigan.

Burns, a 1999 Grand Haven graduate, recently wrapped up her eighth season as coach of the Grand Haven Middle School volleyball team at White Pines. She coached several players on the current varsity roster, including Cole, who was about 6-feet-2 at the time. Today, Cole stands 6-5, which is three inches taller than Burns.

“I was lucky to be able to coach her,” said Burns, who also works as a communications relations specialist in Grand Rapids. “She understood the game very well at that age, and I remember telling her parents that she’d be playing volleyball in college. They were like, ‘No, no no.’ It was all basketball at that point.”

Cole has developed into arguably the best player in the state of Michigan and was also ranked as the No. 3 player in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com earlier this fall.

“I think the coolest thing about Abby is that she has so much more potential to grow in the sport,” Burns said. “She still hasn’t reached her best. The next couple years watching her are going to be a lot of fun.”
