3 Questions: Fruitport girls basketball

Three questions on the Fruitport varsity girls basketball team:
1. The Trojans were senior-heavy a year ago. What players return to the court this winter?

Fruitport graduated a majority of its production on the court from last winter, including leading scorer Amber Carmean and outstanding point guard Lauren Hazekamp. The cupboard isn’t entirely empty at Fruitport, but it’s certainly not fully stocked at this point in the season, either. The only returners who have seen significant varsity minutes are guards Debbie Pekel and Francesca Cerniglia. Jessica Erny and Amy Rogers each saw limited playing time a year ago.

2. What newcomers will make an impact for the Trojans?

Fruitport welcomes seven juniors off last year’s junior varsity team, and coach Bob German characterizes those juniors as an athletic group. That group includes Hayley Richards, Haylie Hanks, Janelle Vest, Breanne Burns, Allison Beckwith, Alexis Black and Caitlin Hughey. German will be watching carefully over the next few weeks to see which of those girls will be ready to step into the fast-paced varsity game and contribute.

3. Fruitport upset a 17-win Spring Lake team in last year’s Class B district tournament. Do the Trojans have any late-season magic in store for this year?

With a young, inexperienced team, it’s very likely that the Trojans’ best basketball will be played toward the end of the season, not at the start of the year. That bodes well for tournament time. Unfortunately, the Trojans jumped up from Class B last year to Class A this year, and they land District No. 6, which is hosted by Grand Haven. The Buccaneers are the defending Class A state champions and were ranked No. 4 in the state this winter by the Detroit News. Toss in powerhouse Mona Shores, along with Muskegon, Cedar Springs, Kenowa Hills and Reeths-Puffer, and Fruitport’s hopes of winning a district title certainly don’t look very bright.
