Bruinsma helps WMC girls fend off Covenant Christian

WMC’s Rachel Bruinsma picked up two quick fouls and sat most of the first half before erupting for a dozen points in the third period to help Western Michigan Christian to a 43-36 win over host Covenant Christian Friday night.

With their leading scorer on the bench, the Lady Warriors managed leads of 8-6 at the first stop and 14-12 at intermission.

Bruinsma helped WMC increase the lead to 33-24 going into the final period. She also grabbed six rebounds and had five steals.

Vanessa Eekhoff had six points and seven rebounds while Alyssa Wright tossed in six points and Lindsey Johnson had five. Sarah Hughes had five rebounds and Julie Merz dished out five assists.

Freshmen: WMC lost 49-16. Abbie Alfree tossed in six points.


Trailing by 15 points at halftime, Western Michigan Christian cut it to seven points in the third period before bowing to league-foe Covenant Christian Friday night, 67-45.

The Warriors trailed 20-11 at the end of one, 33-18 at intermission and 46-35 going into the final quarter.

Junior Bernard Smith led WMC with 14 points and 17 rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double. Henry DeKam chipped in with 13 points.

The Chargers connected on 24 of 29 free throws while the Warriors made just 5 of 15 from the charity stripe.

WMC drops to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in the River Valley Conference.
