Smith continues to be a double-double machine for WMC

"Big B" as he is affectionately known was just too much for host North Muskegon Tuesday night as 6-foot, 5-inch, 265-pound junior Bernard Smith put up 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Western Michigan Christian to a 65-54 win over the Norsemen.

WMC led 15-11 at the first stop, 29-24 at intermission but trailed 45-44 at the end of the third quarter that saw North Muskegon go on an 8-0 run.

The Warriors scored 20 points in the final quarter on 10 from Smith and seven from senior Henry DeKam to ice the win. DeKam finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds and James Jackson put up nine points.

The Warriors are now 2-3 on the season and Smith has had a double-double each game.

The Warriors are idle until Jan. 2 when the Reeths-Puffer Rockets visit Western Michigan Christian High School.

Junior Varsity: WMC had things under control until North Muskegon went on an 8-0 run to start the third quarter and hung on for a 56-51 win. Devon Eekhoff led the Warriors with 12 points, while Kyle Kingma and James Godwin each put up 10 points.

Freshmen: WMC lost 59-47. Jordan Rhodes tossed in 20 points and DeMonta Bartree added 15.


Western Michigan Christian’s girls basketball team turned a tight game into a rout Tuesday night by outscoring league foe Tri-Unity Christian 24-11 the second half to give the Warriors a 50-32 win over the visiting Defenders.

WMC led 15-14 at the first stop, 26-21 at halftime and 40-29 going into the final period.

Senior Rachel Bruinsma led the way with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Classmate Vanessa Eekhoff tossed in 14 points and snared five rebounds, while Jessica Knoll added six points and had three assists.

Julie Merz also dished out six assists.

The Warriors, who move to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the River Valley Conference, are off until they travel to Mona Shores on Jan. 4.

Junior Varsity: WMC lost 30-18. Melanie Weesies put in 10 points and Ella DeWyn added 4.
