Lakers' girls fall to Big Reds

Spring Lake’s varsity girls basketball team played much better on Friday night than on Thursday, but unfortunately for coach Rich Hyde’s team, the result was the same.

The Lakers, competing in the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame Girls Basketball Classic, came up short against Muskegon on Friday, 40-33.

On Thursday, Spring Lake fell to Mona Shores, 51-31.

Megan VandDeWeg and Brittany Beeler each scored nine points for the Lakers. Beeler also had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals, while VanDeWeg snared eight rebounds.

Jewel Wiersma had six points to go with 12 boards. Keslee Zuidema added eight rebounds for Spring Lake, while Molly Miedema and Breanna Williams each had three assists.

Junior Varsity: Spring Lake improved to 5-2 on the season with a 36-32 win over Muskegon. Randy Rice led the way with 11 points, while Ayna Gordon had 10 points and seven steals. Remington French added eight points and 13 boards.

Freshmen: The Lakers shut down the Big Reds, winning 23-16. Emma Horne and Ellen Lauinger each had six points, while Anna Windemuller played great defensively.
