The Meijer Hall of Fame Classic boys basketball tournament features some big-time matchups later this week, including Grand Haven taking on a team from the east side of the state.

The showcase tournament begins on Thursday, with Grand Rapids Christian and rising star Drake Harris taking on O-K Red powerhouse East Kentwood. That game tips off at 6 p.m. at Reeths-Puffer High School.

The second game on Thursday features Muskegon against Westland John Glenn. John Glenn is currently 3-1 on the season, with one of its wins a 55-13 thrashing of South Lyon East.

On Friday, the Buccaneers of Grand Haven take on Westland John Glenn at 6 p.m. Muskegon then meets East Kentwood at 7:30.

Grand Haven is currently 3-2 on the year. After winning their first three games, the Bucs have suffered back-to-back losses to Grand Rapids Catholic Central and Spring Lake.

More details on the tournament can be found online at www.mashf.com.

Several other area teams will be in action this week, including Grand Haven’s varsity girls basketball team.

The Buccaneers will take on Lansing Waverly on Thursday at Portland High School.  Waverly was ranked toward the top of the state rankings for most of the year last season, but has struggled to a 3-4 start to the current season.

Grand Haven, meanwhile, is 7-0 on the season after winning the Class A state championship last winter.

Also on Thursday, Spring Lake’s swimming and diving team will compete in the Jenison Invitational, while the Western Michigan Christian bowling team will compete in the Bulldog Invitational.

On Friday, the Buccaneers’ varsity hockey team travels to Midland to take on Dow High School at 2 p.m. The Bucs are off to a strong start this winter despite a pair of losses to rival Mona Shores.

Also on Friday, Fruitport’s boys and girls varsity basketball teams will play host to Comstock Park. The girls game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30.

On Saturday, both Grand Haven and Fruitport will send their varsity wrestling teams to Lowell for an invitational featuring some of the top teams from across the state of Michigan.
