Girls Basketball showdown

A year ago, a girls basketball showdown between Grand Haven vs. Lansing Waverly would have dominated the headlines as a matchup between the two top-ranked teams in the state.

This year, the showdown has lost some of its luster, but Buccaneers’ coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer is still hopeful that Waverly will give her team a good game tonight.

Grand Haven (7-0) meets Lansing Waverly (3-4) tonight at Portland High School for a holiday showdown between a pair of programs that have both claimed state championships over the past few years.

The Buccaneers won the Class A state title in 2012 while Waverly won in 2004.

“They were ranked second in the state all last year,” Kowalcyk-Fulmer said. “They lost a kids to graduation, just like we did. They had a couple kids go Division 1. They have a good program, although they’re not quite as good this year.

“We think this is the best team we’ve played this year.”

Waverly’s four losses have come to East Lansing (4-0), Holt (5-1), Jackson Lumen Christi (3-4) and Charlotte (5-2).

Waverly relies heavily on the talents of 5-foot-5 senior point guard Victoria Milton.
