When Fruitport was able to dominate the boards in the second half, the scoreboard started to turn in the Trojans’ favor.
Trojans’ 6-foot-4 center Amilio Flores scored all nine of his points in the second half by controlling the paint, as Fruitport pulled away for its second win in the Lakes Eight Conference, a 52-31 decision over Orchard View.
Fruitport guard Tyler Fehler also was a force rebounding the basketball, as he had a team-high 12, to go along with his 22 points.
The rivals were tied at 19-all at the half, but Fruitport outscored the visiting Cardinals 15-7 in the third quarter and 18-8 in the fourth to secure the win. The Trojans improve to 3-5 this season and 2-2 in league action. Orchard View remains winless at 0-9, and also falls to 0-4 in conference games.
Fruitport guard Aaron Veihl added 10 points for the Trojans, while Travis Grimm grabbed eight rebounds.
Orchard View was led by Keith Melton’s 13 points.
TURNOVERS DOOM TROJANS
A lightening quick defensive team from Orchard View spelled disaster for the Fruitport varsity girls basketball team on Tuesday.
The host Cardinals forced the Trojans into 31 turnovers — 21 coming in the first half — as OV coasted to a 60-36 victory.
The Cardinals remained tied with Ludington for the lead in the Lakes Eight Conference at 4-0, while also improving to 6-4 overall. Fruitport drops to 2-8 and 0-3 in the league.
Thanks to a 23-5 second-quarter scoring advantage, OV had a commanding 41-17 lead at the half, but Fruitport coach Bob German was proud with the fact that his team didn’t give up.
“We did a much better job in the second half handling the pressure,” German said. “I was proud of the way the girls came out of the halftime. They never quit.”
Jessica Erny connected on a pair of 3-pointers and led the Trojans with eight points. Francesca Cerniglia added seven points and seven rebounds.
Orchard View had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by junior Daejia Hill’s 15.
Junior Varsity: Fruitport suffered a tough 24-22 setback to Orchard View. The Trojans (3-7 overall) received nine points and nine rebounds from Kara Knoll, 12 rebounds from Delaney Bennett and three steals from Kelsey Alviar.
