Host Western Michigan Christian boys cruised to its seventh-straight win Tuesday night, 64-48 over Whitehall.

The teams stayed close through the first half, with the Warriors leading 14-7 at the first stop and 30-25 at halftime.

The Warriors widened their lead in the third quarter on the back of junior Bernard Smith, who tossed in 10 points during the period to give WMC a 50-39 lead going into the final quarter.

Smith finished the night with 27 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to help bring the Warriors to 8-3 on the season. Whitehall's Isaac Love led all scorers with 29 points.

“Bernard cleaned up the boards,” said WMC coach Kyle Mastenbrook, “We hit the glass hard.”

Smith had more help than Love as seniors Christian Brower and Henry DeKam each put up eight points, while sophomore Logan Waller added seven and Alex Rop dished out six assists.

Junior Varsity: WMC won 56-34. James Godwin led the way with 12 points, while Jared Varnado and Devin Eekhoff each put up eight points and Ben Mast added seven.

Fruitport Calvary Christian’s boys basketball team faced the challenge of trying to slow down Wyoming Potter House guard Patrick Barnhart on Tuesday.

The Eagles passed the test with flying colors.

Barnhart, one of the leading scorers in the state with an average of 28 points a game, was held to just two by an inspired Eagles’ defensive performance.

“He had 48 last Friday,” said Calvary Christian head coach Jim Warren. “Our point guard, Drew Mane, is extremely quick and is in great shape, so he was able to challenge him all over the court and try to deny him the ball. He really did a tremendous job of frustrating (Barnhart) all night.”

Instead of Barnhardt filling up the hoop, it was Eagles’ junior center Michael Warren, who led all scorers with 28 points. He also pulled down 14 rebounds.

Mark Carlson added 18 points for Calvary Christian, which improves to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the Alliance League.

The Eagles travel to face Byron Center Zion Christian on Friday.
