A win is a win, but Grand Haven varsity girls basketball coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer didn’t have a whole lot of good things to say about Tuesday’s 41-31 victory over winless East Kentwood.

The unbeaten Buccaneers led 11-2 after one quarter of play and were ahead 31-14 going into the fourth quarter. The Falcons eventually trimmed that lead down to seven, but could get no closer.

“I feel like we’re playing down to our competition,” said Kowalczyk-Fulmer, whose team is now 10-0 overall and 1-0 in O-K Red Conference play. “We didn’t pass particularly well, we didn’t shoot particularly well, but we did some good things, too. We know we’re capable of playing much better.”

Senior center Abby Cole had a big game for the visiting Bucs, scoring 14 points to go along with seven blocked shots and three rebounds.

Taylor Craymer added nine points and a team-high seven boards, while point guard Amanda Merz scored three points, grabbed four rebounds, and had four steals and four assists.

Jami Hogeboom had four points off the bench for the Bucs, who shot just 32 percent from the field.

Ariyana Harris and Charity Bruce each scored nine points for East Kentwood, which falls to 0-9 on the season.

A year ago, East Kentwood was the only team to beat Grand Haven, but the Falcons graduated nine players off that team.

Things get much tougher for the Buccaneers. They host Rockford (6-3) for a Bucs’ Pride cancer awareness game on Friday, then host Grand Rapids Catholic Central (8-2) on Tuesday and visit Grandville (8-2) next week Tuesday.

Our next three games are the three toughest games on our 20-game schedule,” Kowalczyk-Fulmer said. “If you can’t get up for Rockford at home on Frida for Bucs Pride … The kids will be really excited.”

Junior Varsity: Grand Haven suffered a 37-20 loss to East Kentwood on Tuesday. Michala Rinquist scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and added three steals for the Bucs. Amy Kober added six points and four rebounds.
