Wrestling roundup: Martinez scores 100th career win for Trojans

Fruitport’s varsity wrestling team split a pair of Lakes Eight Conference matchups on Wednesday.

Highlighting the evening was a crowning achievement by senior Tommy Martinez, who earned his 100th career victory.

Martinez scored a major decision over Grant’s Niko Guarjardo at 130 pounds, then jumped up a weight class and pinned Ludington’s Mason Wild at 135.

Following his 100th win, Martinez was lifted onto the shoulders of his appreciative teammates.

Fruitport defeated Ludington, 42-39. In addition to Martinez, the Trojans received wins from Cameron Butler at 112 pounds, Jon Shepard at 119, Gavin Taylor at 125, Alexander Foster at 130, Collin Butler at 140, and Austin Fialek at 152.

Ludington won the final three weight classes, but had fallen too far behind to catch up.

Against Grant, the Trojans suffered a 48-29 loss. Winners for the home team included Cameron Butler at 112, Foster at 125, Collin Butler at 140, Fialek at 152, and Jack Beeman at 215.


Grand Haven evened its O-K Red record at 2-2 with a 35-30 victory over Hudsonville on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers received wins from Eric VanHorsen at 125 pounds, Evan Johnson at 135, Connor Moynihan at 171, Monnor Morley at 189, Matt Mulcahy at 215, Chase VanHoef at 285, and Camden Bertucci at 112.

The Bucs celebrated Alumni Night and honored Dave Demspey for his 40-plus years of contribution to the Grand Haven wrestling program.

In the junior varsity competition, Grand Haven won 34-27. Victories were scored by Santiago Lopez, Juan Becerra, Alec Benton, Austin Stoner, Jakob VanHorsen, Jake Wahl, Nick Mulcahy and Jarod Lancaster.
