Over the past several years, Russ Gabel has seen his level of fishing know-how skyrocket.
Gable is the president of Freewater Experience, a faith-based outdoors ministry in which he takes outdoorsmen of all ages — but especially youngsters — fishing.
Now Gable wants to share the knowledge he’s collected with those who want to become better fishermen. Gable will host a five-week fishing class, titled “Your best year of fishing in Grand Haven,” on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:45 p.m. at Watermark Church, located at 13060 U.S. 31 in Grand Haven.
The class will meet on Feb. 12, 19 and 26, then take March 5 off before meeting again March 12 and 19.
“Basically, our ministries been growing over the past three years, and I’m able to do this full time now due to the donations coming in,” Gable said. “I wanted to offer a class to the community to teach some of the techniques we use over the year.
“We want to do a class to share the knowledge that we’re using to catch a lot of fish and have a lot of fun.”
The format of the class will follow the local open-water fishing seasons, starting with ice-out and ending late in the fall.
“We’ll be progressing through the year,” Gabel said. “The first week is early to mid spring. The second is May and June; the third is salmon in the summer; the fourth is mid-summer; and the fifth is the end of the year.”
Cost of the class is $40 for the first member of a family and $20 for each additional family member. Registration deadline is Monday, Feb. 11.
