Haven boys stumble at Hudsonville

A sluggish first half on the offensive end was too much for Grand Haven’s varsity boys basketball team to overcome in a 57-41 loss at Hudsonville.

The Buccaneers (10-8, 5-5 O-K Red) managed just two first-quarter points and trailed 22-13 at the half.

The Eagles’ lead ballooned to 20 in the second half before the Bucs clawed back to within 10 in the fourth quarter.

Missed free throws cost Grand Haven a chance to get even closer, and Hudsonville (12-6, 7-2 O-K Red) pulled away late to remain tied with East Kentwood atop the O-K Red Conference standings.

“We were just missing some pretty good shots,” said Grand Haven coach Steve Hewitt, whose team upset Hudsonville earlier in the season. “We were getting open shots — shots that we probably made the first time around against them.”

Sean Steffel and Ethan Groothuis led Grand Haven with 10 points each, while Ty VanWieren scored seven.
