Haven swimmers make the cut

Several Buccaneers' swimmers turned in state-qualifying times as Grand Haven placed fourth at Saturday's O-K Red Conference swimming and diving competition.
All three Grand Haven relays swam state cut times, including the 200-yard medley relay team of juniors Josh Tooker, Josh Nicholson, Austin Bessinger and senior Rory Thibault. Their time of 1 minute, 42.91 seconds was only good for sixth place at the meet, but was half a second ahead of the state qualifying time.
The Bucs' 200 freestyle relay team of Bessinger, Thibault, sophomore Spence Poort and senior Trey Jennings took fifth with a time of 1:31.58, also qualifying for the state meet.
In the final event of the meet, the Bucs' 400 free relay team of Bessinger, senior Noah baker, Poort and Jennings took sixth at 3:23.49, drawing cheers from the Bucs' coaches as they touched the wall ahead of the state qualifying time of 3:23.89.
Individually, Poort qualified for the state finals in both the 100 and 200 freestyles. He placed third in the 100 free with a time of 48.77 seconds. Tabalm Afrik of West Ottawa won the race in 45.94 seconds.
The Buccaneer sophomore was fourth in the 200 freestyle at 1:48.04. Cory Boogaart of Hudsonville took first in the race at 1:44.51.
The Bucs' best event was the diving competition, where senior Casey Carlson took fourth with 377 points. Junior Griffin Dwyer was sixth at 350.40, and junior Ethan Bailey placed ninth at 271. Andrew Tafelski was 14th with 229.05 points.
Jennings placed seventh and Thibault eighth in the 200 individual medley with times of 2:06.84 and 2:07.40, respectively. Tooker was 11th in the race. Bessinger swam to a sixth-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.15 seconds, while Hunter Jonas was 13th in 59.31.
The Bucs' Hayden Schouman finished eighth in the 500 freestyle at 5:07.47, while Jennings was ninth at 5:05.43.
Tooker was 10th in the 100 backstroke at 59.33, followed by Baker in 12th place at 1:00.28 and Hunter in 16th at 1:04.52.
Thibault swam a time of 1:04.27, good for eighth place in the 100 butterfly, followed by Nicholson in ninth place at 1:03.72. Nate Dufon was 13th in 1:05.66.
Baker placed 16th in the 50 freestyle at 23.68 seconds.
The Division 1 state finals will be held at the Holland Aquatic Center March 8-9.
