An underdog Gaylord team hung tough for a half, but Grand Haven’s combination of size, defense and big-game savvy was more than enough to boost the Buccaneers’ girls basketball team to a 54-34 victory over the Blue Devils at Traverse City West High School.
Gaylord had a huge home-court advantage, and took full advantage of that fact early. Guards Mackenzie Edwards and Alexandra Simmons each hit several long jumpers in the opening half, scoring 15 of their team’s 19 first-half points.
The Bucs went inside to Abby Cole and Taylor Craymer for 14 of their 25 points before halftime.
In the second half, the Bucs turned up the pressure on defense and used a healthy dose of Craymer and Cole to pull away. Craymer finished with 16 points while Cole added a triple-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds, 10 blocked shots and six assists.
