Grand Haven’s varsity girls basketball team has done it again.

The Buccaneers edged Grosse Pointe South, 60-54 in overtime, to claim their second consecutive Class A state championship.

Both teams had chances to win the game at the end of regulation, but came up empty.

In overtime, the Bucs got on the board with five quick points, then played lock-down defense to secure their second straight state title.

Abby Cole picked up her fourth foul late in the third quarter, but managed to stay on the floor throughout the end of regulation and overtime. She finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and eight blocked shots.

Hannah Wilkerson led the Bucs with 17 points and played tremendous defense on South’s dynamic scorer, Cierra Rice, who still managed to score 24 points.

Taylor Craymer added 14 points for the Bucs, and Amanda Merz had nine, including a 4-of-6 performance from the free throw line.

The Bucs struggled tremendously against Grosse Pointe South’s press, turning the ball over 32 times. But they shot a sizzling 76 percent from the floor and made 5-of-6 3-point attempts.

The win was the 51st in a row for the Buccaneers.

Grand Haven beat Grosse Pointe South in last year’s state final, 54-53.
