Spring Lake and Zeeland’s boys’ lacrosse teams battled in a back-and-forth thriller on Wednesday at Grabinski Field in Spring Lake and it wasn’t decided until Jack McKeough fired in the game-winner in a second overtime session, giving the Lakers a 10-9 victory.

“We have spent the last four years battling Zeeland and tonight was no different,” said Spring Lake coach Doug Sharp, whose squad improves to 2-1 this season. “Great game back and forth, never more than a two-goal advantage for either team.”

Spring Lake’s McKeough scored the tying goal with just 14.4 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to the first overtime session. The Lakers and Chix were still deadlocked, but McKeough ensured it wouldn’t extend past a second extra session. The senior led his team with seven goals and two assists.

“He’s our senior captain who anchored the team offensively,” Sharp said.

Sharp also credited Chase Slagboom with a tremendous game at midfielder and long stick defender, while also firing in a goal for the Lakers. Keying the Lakers’ defense was Cory Stratz, Gabe Giddings and Jared Marod, while goalie Drew Carey recorded 17 saves in the victory.

Collin Betten scored twice for Spring Lake, and Michael Tomaszczyk and Alec Palmer each had an assist.

“I was very proud of our entire team for their performance,” Sharp said. “We never quit and never stopped fighting. This was a game won by the little things that all added up.”

Spring Lake is off for Spring Break and returns to action on April 11 against West Ottawa.
