The honors continue to roll in for Grand Haven senior Abby Cole.

The senior who led the Buccaneers’ varsity girls basketball team to back-to-back Class A state championships, was named to the All-State Dream Team by the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press.

The 6-foot-5 Cole, who averaged 14 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.7 blocked shots per game, helped the Bucs win 51 consecutive games over the past two seasons. She will play volleyball at the University of Michigan next year.

Cole was also named to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan’s Best of the Best team.

Earlier this year, Cole was a runner-up for the state’s Miss Basketball award, and was named the Associated Press Class A player of the year.

Buccaneers’ coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer recently tabulated Cole’s career statistics. Her 535 career blocks over three years puts the Bucs’ senior fourth on the Michigan career list. Grandville’s Alyssa DeHaan holds the state record with 718 blocked shots over her four-year varsity career.

As a senior, Cole blocked 234 shots, which is third on the single-season list. Mackenzie Kudron of New Boston Huron holds the single-season record with 257 blocks.

Cole had 158 blocks as a junior and 143 as a sophomore. She didn’t play on the varsity team as a freshman.

Cole’s 17 blocked shots against Holland Christian earlier this year is fourth on the all-time single-game list. Cole also blocked 16 shots in a game twice and 15 once, putting her on the single-game record list several times.

Cole’s 12 blocks against Westland John Glenn in this year’s state semifinals set a Michigan state record for blocks in a semifinal or final game. She had 11 blocks against Inkster in last year’s semifinals, and 10 against Grosse Pointe South in this year’s title game.

“When I submit all of this, her name’s going to be all over the record books,” Kowalczyk-Fulmer said.
