Area teams earn all-state academic honors

The varsity swim teams from Grand Haven and Spring Lake recently earned academic all-state honors, as announced by the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.

Grand Haven’s boys team picked up honorable mention recognition in Division 1 with a cumulative grade point average of 3.49. They were one percentage point shy of the 10th best GPA and all state honors.

The top 10 schools in each division earn all-state honors.

Grand Haven’s girls finished 10th in Division 1 with a 3.62 GPA, while Spring Lake’s girls were eighth in Division 3 with a 3.63.


For the third year in a row, Grand Haven’s varsity boys basketball team has achieved academic all-state honors.

Recognized by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, the Bucs had the third-highest cumulative grade point average among school in Class A with a 3.639.

Team members include Chad Mattson, Max Young, Sean Steffel, Kevin LaCroix, David Zuidema, Connor Grimes, Ethan Groothuis, Mac Carter, Isaak Newhouse, Ryan Peterson, Ty VanWieren, Bryce Peterson, and John Cahalan. The team is coached by Steve Hewitt.

Spring Lake’s varsity boys team received honorable mention recognition in Class B, while Western Michigan Christian received the same honor in Class C.
