Although the final score revealed a tie with rival Rockford on Monday, Grand Haven varsity tennis coach Jaime Oppenlander said she was pleased with the Bucs’ performance, considering the circumstances they’ve been under.

“We’ve only played one other match this season, so we played well for our second time out,” she said. “Especially the doubles. All four levels were close matches and we took three of them.”

The Bucs scored wins at No. 1 with Maggie Ginocchio and Olivia Reed (6-2, 2-6, 6-4); at No. 3 with Lauren Kruggel and Allison Cotter (5-7, 6-3, 6-2); and at No. 4 with Josie Hendrickson and Nikki Burkett (7-5, 6-4).

The Bucs’ lone singles win came at No. 3, where junior Gretchen Kelly prevailed by a 6-4, 6-4 final.

Erin Staal fell in straight sets to Rockford freshmen Adeline Nelson (6-2, 6-2); Meghan Hendrickson dropped a three-set battle at No. 2 (0-6, 6-1, 4-6); and Ellery Murphy fell in straight sets to another Rockford freshman, Lauren Mirecki (6-1, 6-4).

“There’s no doubt the time will come for our singles players,” Oppenlander said. “Rockford is a strong team, for sure, and they have a lot of young players, meaning they’ll be strong for the next few years, too.”
