Grand Haven’s varsity baseball team suffered a pair of losses to rival Rockford on Tuesday.
In the opener, the Bucs came up short in a 5-2 contest. Ty VanWieren threw a solid game for the Bucs, striking out eight batters over six innings.
Connor Grimes and Cody Jonas each had an RBI in that game.
Rockford then scored a 14-2 win in Game 2.
Jeff Stevens was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for Grand Haven, while Jonas was 2-for-2 and Dale Thielbar added a base hit. Stevens and Thielbar each scored runs for the Bucs.
Grand Haven continues a busy week at Rockford on Thursday, then will play at Grand Rapids West Catholic on Saturday.
BUCS’ SOFTBALL SWEPT
Rockford scored a pair of mercy-rule shortened victories over Grand Haven in O-K Red softball play on Tuesday.
The Rams won the opener, 10-0, then won Game 2, 11-0.
The Bucs’ defense made six errors in the opener, while pitchers R.J. Marrow and Kaylee Hartwell combined to walk eight batters while striking out five.
Katelyn Messner and Audrey Boersen each had a hit for the Bucs.
In Game 2, Abby Styck, Emily Shaler and Jordan Buckingham each had a single for Grand Haven.
Styck and Boersen shared time in the pitchers’ circle, combining to walk five without striking out a batter.
Junior Varsity: Grand Haven took second at a weekend tournament in Hamilton, then were swept in a doubleheader by Rockford on Tuesday, dropping their season record to 9-4. The Rams won the opener, 12-6, then snuck out a tight 9-8 win in Game 2.
