Spring Lake’s varsity girls softball team suffered a disappointing Lakes Eight Conference loss in Game 1 of its doubleheader at Tri-County on Tuesday, but bounced back with a dominating win in Game 2.

The Lakers dropped the opener, 5-4, in a game that they led 4-0 at one point.

“That’s something we’ve done this year is score early, but then not put teams away,” said coach Bill Core.

Emily Blahnik, Desi Parker, Ashley Keena, Kelsee Zuidema and Desi Sherwood had key hits for the Lakers, while Keena took the loss, allowing nine hits and striking out six.

In Game 2, the Lakers exploded offensively in a 13-2 victory.

Parker earned the win, allowing just two hits while striking out six.

Zuidema had a pair of hits and scored twice, while Sherwood scored three runs.

The Lakers are now 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the Lakes Eight. They face another league contender on Thursday when they travel to Grant.

“Even though we lost, we still control our own destiny,” Core said.

Junior Varsity: Spring Lake swept a doubleheader from Tri-County, winning 8-2 and 17-7. Gabi Appel had a big day at the plate, as did Randi Rice (five hits, five runs) and Sadie Johnson (three hits, three runs). Laura Park earned the win in both games.

Grand Haven suffered a pair of losses to O-K Red foe East Kentwood on Tuesday.

In the second game, Morrow pitched the first inning, then Kaylee Hartwell pitched the next two, allowing four walks while striking out three.
