Some tough draws for the Spring Lake varsity girls tennis team meant a short stay at the Division 3 state finals, which began on Friday at Genesys Health Club in Holland. Flight champions will be finalized today.

By Friday evening, the Lakers had just one flight remaining — their No. 2 doubles team of senior Stephanie Sabo and sophomore Jori Henderson. The duo received a first-round bye, and then defeated the team of Anne Lotteman and Brittany Jansen from Grand Rapids South Christian, 6-2, 6-3. Sabo and Henderson will take on the flight’s No. 2 seed from Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood today.

The rest of the Lakers’ competitors were mostly one-and-done.  At No. 1 singles, Lenka Pousova breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 opening-round win against Charlotte’s Ashleigh Reinbold, but the Slovakian exchange student saw her season end against Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s Sydney Liggins — the flight’s No. 2 seed — 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 2, junior Roxane Stroebel had a first-round bye, but was bounced from the bracket by Trenton’s Brittany Vinca, 6-2, 6-1. Amanda Twu suffered the same fate at No. 3, as she fell in the second round after a bye, dropping a 7-6 (9), 6-0 decision to Grand Rapids South Christian’s Brittany Zuidema.

Meryn Campbell won her opening-round match against an opponent from Battle Creek Harper Creek, but couldn’t pull an upset of the No. 1 seed, Cranbrook-Kingswood’s Sarah Lipworth, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles play, the strong season of No. 1 team Madison Khem and Faith Lee ended with a second-round loss to Edwardsburg’s Kinzie Hahn and Madison Hatkevich, 7-5, 6-3. Khem and Lee received a first-round bye.

Maddie Parker and Audrie Dalman were victorious against Detroit Country Day in the first round, but were eliminated by Grand Rapids South Christian in their next match in a three-set thriller, 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

After a first-round bye, Rachel Briegel and Megan Oostindie dropped their second-round match to Battle Creek Harper Creek, 6-3, 6-4.
