Lakers' soccer wraps up district crown

The odd years have been good ones for the Spring Lake varsity girls soccer team.
The Lakers have won district championships in 2009 and 2011, and added to that every-other-year trend with a 2-0 victory over Coopersville on Saturday in the Division 2 district title game.
Senior midfielders Abby Dockery and Molly Miedema scored goals 10 minutes apart in the second half for Spring Lake.
With the win, the Lakers (17-2) move on to Tuesday’s Division 2 regional semifinals against Grand Rapids Christian (15-4-3), which beat East Grand Rapids on Saturday, 1-0.
Spring Lake had beaten Coopersville earlier in the season, but this time around, the Broncos came out firing, putting the Lakers on their heels in the early going.
“They put up a good fight for the first 10 minutes, and that really set the tone,” Lakers’ coach Jeremy Thelen said. “We knew this wasn’t going to be one of those run-away games. Coopersville played good defense all night, and they had a couple good chances. They had a great chance in the first minute of the game.”
Spring Lake withstood the early onslaught, and began to dominate the game by controlling things in the midfield.
One of the keys to the Lakers’ midfield is freshman Morgan Carey, who excels at winning balls in the air and dominating the game physically.
“At first, we were a little rough, but we got together,” Carey said. “We just had to learn to adapt to their style. We knew it was going to be a tough game and we had to battle.”
Dockery scored the Lakers’ opening goal on a shot that got past Broncos’ goalie Meaghan Hogan.
Miedema then scored on a shot that deflected off another player and into the net.
“I was surprised when it went in,” Dockery said of her game-winning score. “It was very slow. I think it was a change-up for (Hogan).”
