Grand Haven Golf Course will continue to stake its claim as the most patriotic golf course in the country when it hosts the Patriots Day Golf Outing on July 18.
The event benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation, which was started by GHGC co-owner Major Dan Rooney.
“This means a lot to me not only because it’s a great event, but because everyone seems to have that spirit to do something right, to do something good,” said GHGC Director of Golf Kirk Sherman. “Plus, it’s a lot of fun. Dan comes into town, and it’s one of the few weeks when he’s in town. We typically have between 200-220 golfers.”
The event includes 8 a.m. and a 2 p.m. shotgun starts. Breakfast is served before the morning tee time, and lunch is offered between the two rounds.
Cost is $125 per player; $75 for military veterans; and $50 for those who are in active military duty.
“This is a great thing because it’s a national Patriot Golf Day, a national fundraising tool to raise money for the Folds of Honor, and it started right here in Grand Haven, Michigan,” Sherman said. “I don’t think people realize that. And it’s gotten so big. Dan’s been on Fox & Friends, he’s golfed with President Bush, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicholas.
“We just like to show the respect to the military people who have served our country. When you’re here in the morning and you hear the vocalist singing the national anthem, there isn’t a dry eye on the grounds.
“It’s just a wonderful feeling, a wonderful event that’s also a lot of fun.”
The Folds of Honor Foundation was founded by Major Dan Rooney in 2007. Rooney, a former F-16 fighter pilot who served three combat tours in Iraq, started the foundation to help support the families of military men and women injured or killed in the line of duty.
The foundation’s mission statement reads, “Through scholarships and other assistance, we give back to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to our country. … We feel this is our duty as citizens of the greatest country in the world.”

Another way Grand Haven is honoring America is by recognizing Red Shirt Fridays, an even sponsored nationally by Ralph Lauren Polo.
“Most of the golf courses that support the Folds of Honor have their staff wear red shirts on Fridays,” Sherman said. “We do a BBQ and do discounts on golf.”
