Hanoi Capitals baseball team to visit GH on Monday

Ben Treutler lived in Hanoi, Vietnam, for five years, and during that time, he and his dad, Tom, introducted baseball to the youngsters of that town.

Ben has since moved back to Grand Haven, but on Monday, he’ll get a chance to play with his old friends from Hanoi.

That’s because Tom Treutler is bringing the Hanoi Capitals’ U14 Pony League baseball team to Grand Haven for an exhibition game against the Young Bucs baseball team.

The game, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Grand Haven High School, is part of the Capitals’ tour of the United States.

“We had hoped to bring the team overseas this year to play, as our last overseas trip was to South Korea two years ago,” said Tom Truetler, a Grand Haven native now living in Vietnam. “The kids love it here.”

The team spent several days at a baseball camp at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.

“The FSU baseball staff have been amazing,” Treutler said. “They are really teaching our kids a lot. They gave us a tour of their campus and their baseball facilities, and made a lot of friends.

“We have played a few games here to get rid of some jitters to try to get ready for the tournaments and the games we will play later. A lot of our kids were thrilled to see all of the Buster Posey pictures and his locker at the stadium as he is FSU’s most famous player in MLB.”

The Capitals are currently playing in the Lakeshore Panther 14U Classic at West Ottawa High School.

“It is fun for me to do this event as my family has been involved in sports in the area for a long time," Treutler said.

Ben Treutler now plays on the Young Bucs U14 team, but he’ll suit up with the Capitals on Monday.

“This might be the last chance he gets to play with his old teammates, so the Grand Haven coaches graciously let him play for his old team for this one special game,” Tom Treutler said.
