Running wild in the Windy City

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon proved to be a popular event for local runners.
A total of 16 Grand Haven residents finished the 26.1-mile race on Saturday, while seven Spring Lake residents competed in the event.
Grand Haven’s Drew Bekins, 23, turned in the top time of any local runner as he crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 17 minutes, 17 seconds. That finish was good for 2,272 overall and 131st in his 20-24 age group.
Grand Haven’s Rachel Cotton, 38, also broke the four-hour mark as she completed the race in 3:58.05.
Clint Warber, 22, was just seconds behind Cotton with a time of 3:58.19.
Grand Haven High School senior Chris Semrinec, a member of the Buccaneers’ varsity soccer team, ran the race with his aunt, Kim Costello. Costello, 42, finished in 4:21.05, while Semrinec, 17, came across in 4:44.21.
Other Grand Haven runners to finish the event were Julie Murray Dull (34, 4:19.39), Kevin Riesberg (54, 4:35.37), Alexander VanderMeulen (22, 4:41.34), Andreas Koller (35, 4:41.51), Scott Dyk (42, 4:45.55), Kayla Petersen (24, 5:16.29), Kristin Bryant (40, 5:32.59), James Burkhardt (45, 5:56.33), and Kimberly Burkhardt (46, 5:56.33).
A pair of Spring Lake runners proved once again that age is nothing but a number. Sixty-year-olds James Blais and Samir Hamati completed the marathon, both with excellent times. Hamati crossed the finish line in 4:11.55, good for 138th place in the 60-64 age group. Blais came across in 4:49.32.
Former Laker cross country runner Karen Lomeo, 22, finished in 4:19.09.
Jennifer Lynn, 32, ran a strong race, finishing in 4:07.52, while Jeffery Lynn, 38, wasn’t far behind with a time of 4:19.09.
The best time out of the Spring Lake participants was turned in by Brian Vanbeveren, 34, who broke the four-hour mark with a time of 3:56.10.
Riley Thyfault, 20, a former Laker swimmer, finished the race in 6:38.59.
Fruitport’s Janene Chauvez, 30, turned in a time of 4:35.38.
Steven Holmes of West Olive, 32, ran a tremendous time of 3:27.20, while fellow West Olive resident Jennifer Bernath, 40, ran a time of 3:51.38.
Coopersville’s Gina Fynewever, 24, finished in 4:48.11, while Steven Burg, 22, also of Coopersville, came across in 6:00.45.
The overall race winner was Dennis Kimetto, 29, of Kenya, with a time of 2:03.45, just a few seconds faster than countryman Emannuel Mutai.
The top four runners were from Kenya. Fifth overall was Rockford’s Dathan Ritzenhein, 30, with a time of 2:09.45.
