East Grand Rapids’ Jordan Stanford scored late overtime to lead East Grand Rapids to a 5-4 hockey win over Grand Haven at The Edge Ice Arena in Holland.

A young Buccaneers’ team that lost a majority of last year’s team to graduation put up a valliant fight in its season opener.

Freshman Joey Zelenka opened the scoring, assisted by Jake Steggles.

EGR responded with four straight goals, but the Bucs rallied with goals by Pat Modaff, then a pair of scores by Hayden Modaff to tie the game at 4-4. The Bucs’ fourth goal came with just 13 seconds remaining in the third period.

Assists were provided by Matt Nalley, Zelenka, Nathan Schmidt and James Calkins.

Ryan Henning got the start in goal for the Bucs and made 33 saves. Both teams finished with 37 shots on goal.

The Bucs will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they tangle with rival West Ottawa at The Edge
