A 25-point offensive outburst in the first quarter by Spring Lake paved the way for a comfortable 46-35 win over host Fremont on Friday in the season-opener for the Lakers.

“We got off to a great shooting start,” said coach Rich Hyde, whose team knocked down four 3-pointers in the opening half and five on the game. “We really steamrolled them early.”

Junior center Kelsee Zuidema got things started for the Lakers, scoring nine quick points. That forced Fremont’s defense to sag inside, which opened things up for the Lakers’ perimeter players.

Anya Gordon and Emily VanWingen each hit triples in the first quarter, then VanWingen and Reiko Johnson buried 3-pointers in the second quarter, helping the Lakers build a 35-17 halftime lead.

The Lakers return to action Tuesday as they host Allendale at 5:30 p.m. That game will be followed by the Lakers’ boys in action against Godwin Heights at 7:30.

After a close first half, Reeths-Puffer pulled away from visiting Fruitport after halftime for a 50-33 victory.

The Trojans trailed by just two points at the half, but poor shooting, particiularly in the second half, kept Fruitport from making a run.

Francesca Cerniglia had a second consecutive double-double for the Trojans with 11 points and 24 rebounds. Iyana Brown added 11 points and Janelle Vest grabbed 10 boards for the Trojans.
