Oh so close

The Grand Haven hockey team came out on the wrong end of a back-and-forth contest at the LC Walker Arena against Mona Shores on Wednesday night, 4-3.

It was much closer than the squad’s Dec. 4 matchup. The Sailors, who have several Spring Lake students on this year’s team due to a new co-op agreement, won that one 4-1, on the Buccaneers home ice — The Edge Ice Arena in Holland.

Still, Grand Haven coach Dan Gadbois said his squad has a long way to go.

“This has been our struggle all year,” said Gadbois. “The first game we played against them we got outhit, outhustled, outeverything. Tonight we competed. We don’t have a whole lot of talent, so we’ve got to muck and grind and do everything we can to win. We do that 90 percent of the time, and then you saw the goals that we gave up.

“We had the lead and then we gave it up. Mental errors, we’ve been doing that all year. We’re in games all the time, but in crucial situations we’ve given up the puck, and when we give up the puck, it ends up in the net.”

One such goal occurred near the end of the first period.
