Eagles have Bucs' number

The Grand Haven girls lacrosse team went into Wednesday night hoping to avenge its lone loss of the season.
Grand Haven outplayed visiting Grand Rapids Christian in the middle portion of their showdown, but a scoring barrage from the opposition at the beginning of the game forced Grand Haven to play catchup, and another burst in the second half allowed Grand Rapids Christian to cruise to a 25-11 win.
“They were our only loss this season, and all we wanted to do was beat them,” said senior Katie Harding. “We’ve beaten everybody, we’re technically almost undefeated, but they’re really good.”
The Eagles came soaring out of the gate against the Buccaneers, to the tune of a 10-1 lead with just less than six minutes to play in the first half.
Then Grand Haven found some offensive mojo of its own.
Casey Davis started the comeback for the Bucs, scoring on a free shot with 5:30 left in the first half.
A little more than a minute later, Claire Reenders weaved through traffic for a goal, after a superb pass from Anna Gagnon.
Davis ran past midfield for a goal with just less than three minutes to play, bringing the score to 10-4.
The teams traded goals before heading into the break, putting the score at 11-5.
Another Davis goal early in the second half was sandwiched by two Eagles’ scores, but then the junior scored twice more, bringing the game to 13-8.
Olivia Saber’s goal less than a minute later put Grand Haven down by four — the closest they had been since the opening quarter.
The Bucs would never get closer.
