The Lakeshore Cougars and the South Michigan Timberwolves met in a battle of unbeaten teams on Saturday, with the Timberwolves pulling away for a 42-13 victory.
The Cougars (3-1, 2-0 Great Lakes Football League West) fell behind 7-0 on the opening possession of the game and never got into a rhythm on offense or defense.
Starting quarterback Eric Woodfork (Ottawa Hills High School) struggled in the passing game, connecting on just 4-of-16 attempts for 50 yards. He was picked off twice.
On the ground, the Cougars were led by running back DaVveon Taylor (Muskegon), who rushed for 42 yards on eight carries. Woodfork added 29 yards on 11 carries.
The Cougars’ only offensive score came on a scramble by Woodfork. Their second touchdown came when Ryan Follings (Muskegon) returned an interception 90 yards for a score.
Taylor Fox (Hope College) had a monster game on defense with 17 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Jake Gries (Holland) added 11 assists and three solo tackles.
The Cougars look to rebound on Saturday with a matchup against the Capital City Stealth out of Lansing. That game kicks off at 6 p.m. at Buccaneer Stadium.
