The fifth annual edition will take place at Felix’s Marina, on Stearn’s Bayou five miles east of Grand Haven, at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

“From a spectator point of view, there’s a bridge that goes over Stearn’s Bayou,” said Billy Bellinger, who has participated in the race all four years. “We put two buoys out a half-mile apart. In most kayak races you can't see much. In this one you can see it all. ... They'll go out underneath you about six or seven times.”

The day will see three different races, an 8-mile, a 3-mile and a youth run.

Bellinger said the 3-mile is typically less intense than the 8-mile.

“For some of the people, it might be their first time,” Bellinger said. “They're not out to win, they're out to have fun. You might have four or five trying to win. The others will be under the bridge, ‘Hey mom, take my picture.’ ”

There are still spots available for Saturday’s race, which is sponsored by Lakeshore Kayak Rental and Earth’s Edge. Potential participants can sign up at lakeshorekayakrental.com, or show up to register at 7:30. The cost is $30 for the 8-mile race, $25 for the 3-mile and $10 for the youth race.
