But it was the young girl in the stroller they pushed who inspired their efforts.
The guys were members of the Grand Haven Gringos, a local pond hockey team. They connected with My Team Triumph of the Lakeshore, a group that gives children with disabilities the opportunity to participate in endurance events.
On Sunday, they pushed and pulled 9-year-old Makenzie Shepherd of Muskegon around the Grand Haven Triathlon course.
“Something like this, she never would be able to do it without My Team Triumph,” said Makenzie’s mom, Kelly Aney. “She has cerebral palsy, a complication from being born at 27 weeks.”
Makenzie is going into second grade at Ross Park Elementary School in Mona Shores. One of her teachers introduced her to My Team Triumph after she expressed an interest in doing the Seaway Run with her mom.
“She likes the attention,” Aney said. “She likes to do things out of the ordinary. She doesn’t know she has limitations.”
On Sunday, she was serenaded by the Gringos as they helped her through the course.
