Grand Haven football switches up coaching staff

There was plenty of juggling among area prep football coaches this past offseason.

No move was bigger than in Grand Haven, where Mike Farley stepped down after eight years at the helm of the Buccaneers to take an offensive coordinator position at South Effington High School in Georgia.

In response, Grand Haven named defensive coordinator Jason Duram the program’s interim head coach. Duram will continue to serve as defensive coordinator, while JV coach Nate Smith will take over as the Bucs’ offensive coordinator.

Longtime Buccaneer coach Joe Nelson will take over as the junior varsity coach. He’ll also coach the varsity linebackers. Randy Poel returns as the freshman coach.

“We have a phenomenal coaching staff,” Duram said.

At Spring Lake, a majority of the Lakers’ staff remains intact. Jerry Rabideau returns as head coach for his 16th season at the helm of the Lakers, while offensive coordinator Len Grimmer and defensive coach Tom Holden return as well.

However, a pair of former Lakers who assisted on the staff last year — Adam Setterbo and McHale Smith — have moved on.

Setterbo, who went on to play college football at Michigan State after graduating from SLHS, moved to Chicago, where he accepted a fitness trainer position at Gold Coast Fitness Formula Club.

Smith, who won a national championship playing football at Saint Xavier University, has returned to his alma matter to work toward his masters degree and also coach football.

Things have also stayed relatively stable at Fruitport, which welcomes back head coach Greg Vargas, offensive coordinator Shaun Danicek and assistants Jay Stebelton, Tony Johnson and Roque Ybarra.

The Trojans do have a new offensive line coach though — Vargas.

Fruitport’s head man has taken on the role after the departure of Jack Nummerdor, who left to become the head coach at Holton.

Johnson, a former Division 2 All-American linebacker at Northwood, will coach the position this year for the Trojans.
