Grand Ave. project to begin Monday

Work is set to begin next week on the second and final phase of the Grand Avenue reconstruction project.

“Unless something very unusual happens, it’ll start on Monday,” Grand Haven Project Manager Julie Beaton said Friday.

This final phase will be split into two stages, with the first being from the west side of Doris Avenue to the east side of the east intersection with Gladys Avenue. One-way westbound traffic will be maintained for residents who live in this section, as well as on Pine Ridge and Henley drives.

“We’re going to start removing the pavement on half of the road from Doris to east of the Gladys intersection,” Beaton said.

Once one half of the segment is complete, work will commence on the other side of the road.

The second stage of this year’s work will extend from the east intersection with Gladys to Sheldon Road.

During the work, only residents who live within the project limits will be allowed into the work zone. They will be provided with vehicle windshield decals.

Property owners within the area affected by last summer’s first phase will be required to enter and leave the area using Harbor Drive.

Weather permitting, contractors plan to work up to 10 hours each day, starting at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday, with half days on Saturdays.

“It should be substantially completed by mid- to late-September,” Beaton said, “and then we’ll be out of their neighborhood.”

Beaton noted that she is hopeful that weather would cooperate this summer like it did last year.

Complete site restoration, the top course of asphalt, traffic signs, pavement marking and other miscellaneous tasks will be done once the project nears the completion stage.

The $1.9 million project was approved by City Council in February. Funding comes from the city’s infrastructure bond proceeds and the state.

The Jackson-Merkey crew also worked on the project last year.

“We got through it last year, and we’ll get through it this year,” Beaton said.
