Swim danger posted for Grand Haven State Park

Mark Brooky • Aug 16, 2017 at 6:00 PM

A caution for hazardous swimming conditions for Lake Michigan beaches from Holland to Manistee remains in effect through 9 p.m. Friday.

The beach hazards statement from the National Weather Service effects lakeshore beaches in Ottawa, Muskegon, Oceana and Mason counties.

Hazardous conditions:

— High wave action, strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions expected.

— Strong structural currents, strong longshore currents and rip currents are expected.

Potential impacts:

— West winds of 15-25 mph and waves of 4-7 feet are expected for the rest of Friday.

— The north side of north piers will be dangerous places to swim.

— Beaches with particularly dangerous conditions today (Friday) include Muskegon State Park, Holland State Park, North Beach in South Haven, Stearns Park in Ludington and Mears State Park in Pentwater.

Precautionary/preparedness actions:

— High wave action makes swimming difficult and can tire even a strong swimmer quickly.

— Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can sweep you out into deeper water along the pier structure.

— A longshore current is a lake current that moves parallel to shore. Longshore currents can be strong enough to prevent swimmers from being able to keep their feet on the bottom, making it difficult to return to shore.

— Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you into deeper water.

Grand Haven forecast:

The rest of this afternoon: Partly sunny, with a high near 73. West wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

Friday night: A slight chance of showers between midnight and 5 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. West wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers before 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. West-northwest wind 5-11 mph.
