Jan Joiner, Sherry Hause and Gloria Honey prepared for cold and wet conditions, but the sun came out and warmed up the two-dozen paddlers participating in Saturday’s Paddlepalooza.

Last year it was 70 degrees for the event planned to promote boating safety, said one of the organizers, Ralph Fairbanks.

Still, he was one of several people who had to peel off a layer before paddling the river.

The event, sponsored by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and West Michigan Kayakers, launched from the kayak launch at Hemlock Crossing County Park.
