Operations began Friday at seasonal air facilities near Muskegon and Waukegan, Ill.

Each year, crews staff the facilities to provide increased search-and-rescue capabilities and faster response times to Lake Michigan. Crews from the Detroit area operate at the Muskegon County Airport and crews from Traverse City operate at the airport in Waukegan, Ill.

Each station has a pair of four-person air crews and one helicopter.
