Grand Landing developer talks about the future

“It’s coming together quite nicely,” said Redstar Shores LLC developer Chris Piwowarczyk. “The process took a lot longer than I anticipated. Obviously, we love West Michigan and love Grand Haven. It’s a great piece of property.”

Piwowarczyk plans to break ground sometime over the next 10 days on the first phase of the renewed development, which includes four 12-unit apartment buildings and a clubhouse with pool.

Grand Haven Community Development Manager Jennifer Howland confirmed that her department was in receipt of the building permit request and was reviewing that prior to issuance.

“(The work) is going to be 100 percent weather-related,” Piwowarczyk said. “It’s going to be our goal of getting it closed in before the weather gets bad. We’re going to start pre-leasing as soon as we have a tentative move-in date for residents.”

The second and third phases of the apartment complex would be built as each prior phase fills up.

Regarding the commercial/retail phase — which includes a hotel and several restaurants — Piwowarczyk noted this has also seen progress.

“We’ve had a number of conversations and have three hotel operators who’ve expressed interest,” he said. “They are in the process of getting corporate approval.”

Piwowarczyk said hotel operators make the determination for what hotel brand would be the best fit for the area. For example, the Marriott brand could bring anything from a Fairfield Inn to a Courtyard.

Similar conversations are taking place about the restaurants.

“We’ve been in touch with all of the casual restaurants,” Piwowarczyk said, noting that whatever is built wouldn’t be a drive-through.

Redstar Shores purchased the property from receivership in 2012 for about $3 million.

Gee, glad they have all the other spaces rented out, including the stores. This is just what MDOT was hoping for, an excuse to murder the small green islands along the highway and widen the road both ways. Oh well, it is only the taxpayers who will pay for it in the end...just money people.
