Pope Francis announced the appointment of Monsignor Steven J. Raica on Friday.

The Petoskey News-Review and the Lansing State Journal report Raica will be installed at St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord on Aug. 28.

The 61-year-old Raica grew up in Munising. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and secondary education from Michigan State University and a master's degree from St. John Provincial Seminary in Plymouth.

Raica was ordained a priest in 1978 and named a monsignor 20 years later. He also has served at parishes in Charlotte, Flint and Ovid.

The Gaylord diocese has been without a bishop since last year.
